Gilded Leather Wall Hanging  Translated
Dimensions: : 50 cm,: 71 cm
Description:
Gilded leather wall hanging of Dutch manufacture, specifically Mechelen, first quarter of the 18th century. This wall hanging expresses all the style and fashion of the period with the central axis of the fan and palmetto motif. Ribbons, grids, leaves and flowers are intertwined one above the other to form two large cartouches to the right and left. Light blue and gold accentuate the surface in an exciting way. The internal surfaces of the cartouche band are decorated with veins. The wallpaper represents the development of gilded leather processing in the early 18th century very well. Comparable pieces can be found as wallpaper in two rooms of the Old Court of Bruges (1728) (B) and in Oxburgh Hall (GB); individual panels can be found at the Het Vleeshuis Museum, Antwerp (B); Deutschen Tapetenmuseum, Kassel (inv. no. 86/86), Württembergisches Landesmuseum, Stuttgart (D), (inv. no. E3464).
