Beschreibung:
Giovanni Riva (Turin 1890 - Turin 1973) - Venice, view of St. Mark's Basin with Doge's Palace. 18 x 24 cm (unframed) - 29 x 34 cm (framed). Oil on cardboard, in a contemporary carved wooden frame. Artwork signed lower right: "RIVA". The Turin-born painter Giovanni Riva frequently dedicated himself to Venetian views, rendering them with a loose and textured brushstroke that recalls the European Impressionist tradition filtered through early 20th-century Italian sensibility. The painting depicts St. Mark's Basin with the Doge's Palace viewed from the water: the gothic facade of the building occupies the middle ground of the composition, flanked on the left by a bell tower, while in the foreground, several gondolas animate the lagoon with quick, luminous touches reminiscent of Canaletto's typical repertoire of genre scenes. The brushwork is free and synthetic, with a [painterly] application that prioritizes atmospheric effect over the definition of architectural details.
