Beschreibung:
John MacWhirter RA (Slateford, Edinburgh 1839 - London 1911) — View of Loch Lomond at sunset. 50.5 x 76.5 cm. Oil on canvas, unframed. - Signed lower left: "J. MacWhirter". - Inscribed on the back: "Loch Lomond". John MacWhirter, a member of the Royal Academy and a student at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh, is among the most representative Scottish landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century. His work is distinguished by its views of the Highlands, lakes, and islands of Scotland, treated with a romantic sensibility attentive to atmospheric effects. The painting depicts Loch Lomond at sunset, with the mountains reflected in the still waters of the lake. The sidelong light of the setting sun illuminates the rocks with warm tones, from red to golden brown, while the blended sky and reflective water surface lend the scene a contemplative atmosphere, typical of the artist's best work. On the right bank, a small rural cottage can be glimpsed, the only sign of human presence in the landscape. Condition report: Original canvas, with supporting strips applied to the stretcher. The pictorial surface is in good condition, with signs of aging and wear. All shipments within the EU are free and professionally packed.
