This refined zoomorphic porcelain is an exceptional example of oriental ceramic sculpture, masterfully modeled in the shape of a duck or waterfowl.
The work is distinguished by its complex volumetric articulation, where the naturalistic rendering of the plumage interacts harmoniously with a pictorial decoration of extraordinary visual density. The surface is entirely covered in a rich polychrome that skillfully alternates geometric motifs with lobed areas, within which bloom peonies and chrysanthemums, iconographic elements charged with symbolic meanings linked to nobility and longevity.
The color palette adheres to the aesthetic canons of prestigious Imari production, based on the tonal contrast between the underglaze cobalt blue, the vibrant iron red, and the profuse highlights in pure gold. The execution technique is revealed in the precision of the lines that define the neck and wings, where the application of the enamels follows the anatomical contours of the animal, lending a highly realistic plastic dynamism. This piece, conceived for the export market, testifies to the high level achieved by Japanese craftsmanship between the late Meiji period and the early Taisho era.
