Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 - Milan 1936) - Girl with tiger.
Description:
Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 - Milan 1936) - Girl with tiger. 67 x 56 cm (unframed) - 83 x 72 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a contemporary carved and lacquered wooden frame. Work signed lower left: "E. Magistretti". Emilio Magistretti was a Milanese painter active between the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. Trained in the Lombard academic environment, he stayed in Paris where he assimilated influences from Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which he integrated with a solid realistic foundation. His portrait production is distinguished by vibrant chromatic rendering and the ability to capture the psychology of the subjects with measure and effectiveness. The painting depicts a young woman, half-length, shown in three-quarter view with her gaze directed sideways, in a composed and relaxed pose. Her left arm encircles the neck of a tiger, rendered with naturalistic attention in its striped fur. The background, treated with loose touches of green and ochre, lends depth without diverting attention from the figure. The execution refers to the stylistic features of late 19th-century Parisian painting, an era to which the work is likely to be attributed. Condition report: Lined canvas.
