The two arrows or the dangers of love. French school - early 17th century
Cupid, emerging from the forest, has just struck a young man in love with a beauty with one of his spikes and is struck down next to his lute; on the right, an old man is wooing her, while a small monkey robs him, scattering his golden louis d'or and Death, lurking in the foliage, prepares to fire a deadly arrow at him.
At his feet lie a small dog as a symbol of loyalty and a burning candle, which symbolises both the flame of love and the transience of passion.
