The work is painted on a single poplar panel, as was customary in the most important workshops of the early 16th century.

This magnificent work, a true gem of the Lombard Renaissance, is clearly attributable to the oeuvre of Giovan Pietro Rizzoli, known as il Giampietrino.
In addition to the truly unique and unmistakable stylistic characteristics, the attribution is confirmed by comparisons with some of his similar paintings, particularly with the panel attributed to the Master, exhibited at the Diocesan Museum of Milan, which unequivocally presents all the identical pictorial peculiarities with the same color palette. The version of the "Portacroce" presented here differs in Christ's face being turned towards the viewer on the left side and in the different position of the hands.
The same posture is found in a panel recently auctioned by DOROTHEUM in Vienna, appraised at €80,000 - 120,000 and sold for €75,000 plus auction fees (€94,050). See photo on our website.
Among the known versions of this subject, this is undoubtedly one of the most interesting executed by the Milanese Master.
Working in close contact with Leonardo, Giampietrino assimilated his painting lessons and a strong charge of esotericism, which characterizes the faces of his figures.
