Description: Antique oil painting on canvas depicting Venus and Adonis.
The painting depicts the death of Adonis, the young man loved by Venus, mortally wounded by a boar during a hunting trip, in a sublime atmosphere. The myth, taken from book X of Ovid's Metamorphoses, tells that Venus, as soon as she hears the lament of the dying Adonis in the distance, descends on the earth on her chariot drawn by swans, to assist him. Venus is depicted lying next to her dying lover, their sinuous bodies close together seem to merge in final pain, their slender hands and long fingers outline the despair of the moment, while the hunter's dog sadly attends the tragic epilogue.
