Oil on canvas. Italian School, 19th century. The myth of Procris and Cephalus is a famous and tragic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal told in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Cephalus, a handsome hunter, and Procris, a princess of Athens, were protagonists of a series of misunderstandings and traps that led to her accidental death. In particular, the scene depicted here shows the tragic epilogue of the myth: Cephalus finds Procris dying, accidentally wounded by the spear of her unsuspecting husband. The scene depicted here draws inspiration from the model of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, an important exponent of Lombard Baroque art, for the dramatic composition of the figures, placed in a landscape, however, very different, here not populated by other figures. The painting has been restored and relined in the past, with a new professional, extendable frame.
