Description Theodorus d'Errico the Fleming attr. Madonna and Child, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Anne (from Giulio Romano's Madonna della Gatta) Oil on canvas 140x170 cm .. After careful cleaning, this truly remarkable chamber painting has been restored to perfect legibility and represents one of the most unique works to have recently emerged from the pictorial landscape of the third quarter of the 16th century.. We are looking at a prime example of the Northern European painting season in Italy, dating from the 1570s, likely earlier rather than later. Our canvas meticulously reproduces, with some notable variations, one of the masterpieces from the Roman school of Raphael Sanzio, and also one of the highlights of the Capodimonte Museum and Royal Park in Naples.. If the hypothesis of an earlier dating is valid, the attribution to a recognizable hand, not Italian unless by adoption, seems equally convincing: Dirck Hendricksz. Centen, originally from Amsterdam, who worked in Italy at the end of the 16th century.. .. We are presented with an antique replica, with perceptible variations, of one of the pinnacles of Giulio Pippi, known as Giulio Romano, from the early 16th century: the Madonna della Gatta, housed in the first-floor rooms of the Capodimonte Museum.. .. In all respects, the new painting, which should not date beyond the last two decades of the 16th century, offers a critical essay, a lesson from painter to painter, on Giulio's interpretation of Raphael's work, but, beware, it completely reinvents it in a softer and more sentimental dimension.. .. The reference to Theodorus d'Errico is easily substantiated on stylistic grounds and stems from comparison with works by the master..
