Description:
Ippolito Nicolò Spinola di Lerma (Genoa 1778 – Turin 1856) - Venice, view of St. Mark's Square taken from the portico of the Doge's Palace. 56 x 69 cm (unframed) - 75 x 88 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Work signed lower right: "I. Spinola. Venice". Ippolito Nicolò Spinola di Lerma, Genoese marquis and general of the Savoy army, Grand Chamberlain at the court of Charles Albert, cultivated painting as an activity parallel to his military career and court life, receiving regular training that earned him recognition as an "artist distinguished for the diligent studies he undertook in a regular course at a most renowned school and for the fine proofs of his genius" (Vittorio Angius, Gazzetta piemontese, 1845). His pictorial production fits into the context of Romantic vedutismo of the first half of the 19th century. The painting depicts St. Mark's Square viewed from within the portico of the Doge's Palace: the large Istrian stone arches frame the open square, enlivened by figures in 19th-century attire, street vendors, and passers-by. In the background, the Clock Tower and the façades of the Procuratie emerge, carefully rendered with their alternating arcades. The light, diffused and warm, creates a sharp contrast between the shadows of the portico and the brightness of the square. The small figures recall the repertoire of Venetian Romantic vedutismo, with a fluid and confident handling of the brush. Condition report: Original canvas. Good condition of the painted surface.
