Venetian painter (19th century) - Venice, view of Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo.  Translated
Description:
Venetian painter (19th century) - Venice, view of Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. 40 x 63 cm (unframed) - 49 x 70.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wood frame. The view depicts Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo with the Dominican Basilica of Saints John and Paul, known in Venetian as San Zanipolo, and, on the left, the Scuola Grande di San Marco. In the foreground, the canal with a gondola and two gondoliers animates the scene, while the figures crossing the square belong to the repertoire of 19th-century genre painting. The architectural rendering is precise and documentary: the Gothic brick facade of the basilica, the polychrome rose window, the Gothic pinnacles, and the apse dome are rendered with careful perspective. The equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, a work by Verrocchio, is visible in the background. The work fits into the 19th-century Venetian veduta tradition, with a bright palette and diffused, typically lagoon-like light. Condition report: Relined canvas.
