Venetian painter (19th century) - Venice, view of the Rialto Bridge from the south.
46.5 x 46.5 cm (unframed) - 73.5 x 73.5 cm (framed).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The canvas depicts the Rialto Bridge viewed from downstream, with the Grand Canal bustling with gondolas, transport boats, and merchant vessels. The frontal viewpoint captures the central arch of the bridge with the architectural wings of the banks on either side. The small figures of gondoliers recall the repertoire of Canaletto's macchiette, reinterpreted with a freer brushwork, typical of the Venetian vedute for the consumer market in the late nineteenth century.
