Delightful in its craftsmanship and compact size, this antique Louis XV bedside table is entirely veneered in walnut essence, intact in its components despite its age, the work of Palermitan masters from the mid-18th century.
The design of the commode faithfully reflects the aesthetic demands of mid-18th-century furniture, which disliked straight lines and favored the grace of curved lines, thus appearing dynamic on all three fronts, with 'en cabriole' legs and an elegant apron below the doors.
It is precisely the silhouette of the apron (along with other details, to be honest) that unequivocally marks the Sicilian origin of this bedside table. Its appearance is animated and dominated by a vibrant and lively walnut wood marquetry arranged symmetrically to form a rhomboid pattern on the front of the two doors and on the front of the drawer below them. The shaped top is enhanced by a beautiful slab of Aleppo breccia marble from the same period. The aforementioned two doors conceal a large compartment, and finally, a small drawer centered by a metal handle completes the design at the bottom.
Sicilian cabinetmaking, especially that of its main city, Palermo, reached unsurpassed levels in the field of cabinetmaking around the mid-1700s. This latter was receptive to innovations from the rest of the peninsula, managing to translate the language of the era by innovating it with significant technical and formal solutions that give Sicilian 18th-century furniture its own dignity, even departing from the capital of the kingdom, Bourbon Naples.
The great value of an 18th-century Palermitan bedside table lies above all in its rarity and scarcity on the antique market. To this is added, in the specific case of our commode, its excellent state of preservation, the beautiful patina the wood has acquired over the centuries, never touched and never restored. A piece of furniture delivered to us by history without anyone ever having laid a hand on it.
The beautiful proportions and small dimensions further enhance what has been said so far, characteristics that allow it to be placed even in more confined, tighter spaces and to be perfectly located in today's apartments, which usually have limited square footage. Your purchase will also contribute to enhancing our antiques, Italian ones, 'made in Italy,' those of our unsurpassed ancient craftsmanship.
