In this pair of paintings, the apparently arbitrary arrangement of Carlo Magini's still lifes of everyday kitchen utensils and simple foods is revisited.
Following Roberto Longhi's analyses in the 1950s, the painter is considered one of the greatest naturalists of the eighteenth century. In all his works, the placement of objects and food is careful and refined, in order to simultaneously emphasize both the diversity of surfaces and materials and the interplay of shapes.
In Magini's works, as in those exhibited here, the light is clear and strong, clearly defining the objects, but at the same time never too intense as to make them lose their three-dimensionality.
