A work of great atmospheric charm, Vecchia Albaro represents one of the most beloved themes of Angelo Balbi (Genoa, 1872–1939), a master of Ligurian painting linked to the tonal tradition of the "Grigi" and the practice of painting from life.
The board, in excellent condition, captures a historic corner of the Genoese district treated with a quick touch and sober colors, recalling Balbi's preference for Ligurian views and small formats executed en plein air, a distinctive feature of his production.
The scene, essential yet poetic, reflects that "autonomy" of language that was recognized in him by his contemporaries, the result of his training at Ligustica with Tammar Luxoro and his proximity to the Gruppo di Albaro and the Famiglia Artistica Genovese.
Painting dimensions: width 30 cm, height 27 cm.
