We present this very pleasant composition, a large painting that resembles a window onto a sumptuous 17th-century palace surrounded by its Italian garden, enriched with classical sculptures placed on high pedestals, slender cypresses, and decorative vases, while on the left, a multi-tiered fountain with water features can be seen, a classic element of ancient residences' gardens.
Thanks to the stylistic characteristics of the work, undeniably adhering to 17th-century Roman culture, we are inclined to attribute the hand to one of the Flemish painters who came to the Eternal City for study. In particular, there are many iconographic and stylistic correspondences with a specific iconographic trend taken up by the Flemish painter Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 - 1744) precisely during his Roman sojourn.
This is likely a real place, one of the many gardens that adorned the grand villas on the hills near Rome, although the type of vegetation and setting could evoke the hilly areas around Florence.
The work is a masterful example of how the artist uses architecture and landscape to create an illusion of depth, with a wide central avenue guiding the viewer's gaze towards a majestic palace with an imposing dome, typical of the Italian Renaissance or Baroque style.
The painting is dominated by warm tones of brown, ochre, and dark green, which give the scene a silent, almost dreamlike and monumental air.
For comparison, we can consider the painting 'View of a Palace Gardens with Elegant Figures in the Garden with Statues', follower of Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 – Amsterdam 1744), now at the National Trust (Hartwell House Collection, Buckinghamshire) (https://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/1548023).
His favorite subjects included aristocratic parks with Baroque fountains, mythological statues, water terraces, and ideal Roman ruins, and he therefore became a reference for wealthy bourgeois families who commissioned him to portray the gardens of their important residences.
CONDITION: The painting is in good condition.
