Saint Francis in ecstasy, supported by two angels - Attributed to Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavalier d'Arpino, or his workshop  Translated
Description:
Author: Attributed to Giuseppe Cesari, known as Cavalier d'Arpino (Arpino, 1568 – Rome, 1640) or his workshop. Measurements: Panel only 58x42.5 cm; with frame 79x63.5 cm. Materials: Oil on panel, carved and gilded wooden frame. Refined oil on panel painting depicting the iconography of Saint Francis in ecstasy, supported and comforted by two angelic figures. The work is distinguished by its high-quality pictorial execution, characterized by a skillful use of chiaroscuro that emphasizes the drama and spirituality of the mystical moment. The composition features the Saint in the center, with closed eyes and a face marked by spiritual rapture, while the angels, rendered with delicate complexions and vibrant colored robes, support him with devotion. The executive technique and the physiognomic rendering of the characters suggest a close affinity with the style of Cavalier d'Arpino, a prominent figure in the Roman art scene between the 16th and 17th centuries. The work is presented in a sumptuous Florentine frame of pure gold, richly decorated with foliage motifs, gadrooning, and raised corner applications, which enhance its prestige and visual impact. Stylistically, the painting aligns with international Mannerism with openings towards early Baroque, reflecting the taste of the educated patronage of the period. The object dates back to the late 16th or early 17th century. The state of conservation is excellent, with the painted surface retaining remarkable chromatic brilliance and the frame intact in its decorative structure.  Translated
