Diana the huntress and a handmaid tempted by satyrs disguised as innocent putti. Terracotta sculpture, Paris, 19th century. Measurements: 44x43x31 cm. Of particular beauty and refinement is this allegorical scene in terracotta set within an original gilded wooden base, where Diana the Huntress and a Handmaid are depicted tending to and playing with three jubilant Putti... but the furry legs of the one in the foreground reveal his true nature... he is a Faun!
The sculpture can therefore be interpreted as an allegory of chastity and lust playing with each other and attempting to overpower one another, even through deception.
The sculpture is signed Charles Joseph Lenoir, Paris 1844 - Rennes 1899.
