Ecce Homo, 17th century drawing. (Inv. Correggio, Des. Ag. Carracci) (375x270mm)  Translated
Description:
Ancient drawing reproducing the engraving Ecce Homo by Correggio, painted around 1520 and now preserved at the National Gallery. It was once in the collection of the Preati family of Parma, who commissioned a copy from Jean Boulanger (now preserved at the National Gallery of Parma). Agostino Carracci, around 1586-90, created burin engravings from this model, which were printed in Venice and Bologna. It is likely that Agostino himself, in addition to engraving, also created a painted copy of the Ecce Homo, which is now preserved in the Palazzo Comunale of Rimini. It is plausible that this hand-colored drawing was executed on Agostino Carracci's original prototype, a few years after his death in 1602. From the dedication inscription on the parapet, we recognize the same Latin phrase that appears on the original: ILLA DEI SOBOLES CERTAE DUX ILLE SALUTIS MUNDI OPIEEX NOSTROQUE UNO PRO CRIMINE PASSUS. Missing compared to the original version, now preserved in the collection of the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna, are the dedication to Cardinal Caetani for whom it was produced and Agostino's signature. Unfortunately, the inscription along the margin is no longer legible, and we do not know what it stated. However, next to it we can barely distinguish the signature, certainly of the executor or designer of our work, but it is not easily legible. Next to it is the date, which seems to read the number 1607, but this is not certain. The iconography corresponds to Jesus Christ, crowned with thorns, with his hands tied in a frontal position, observing the viewer. Around him is the Madonna, supported by a Mary, and on the left behind a soldier with a rich helmet, and on the right Pilate leaning on a parapet. The engraving print measures 37.5cm x 27cm, and is of a considerable size, similar to the original work. The condition is generally good, although restorations have been carried out in some parts. The margins are consistent and in excellent condition. In the lower right, the sheet bears two old collector's stamps, to be deciphered. The dimensions of the work, including the frame, are 40cm x 48cm. We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.  Translated
