Coastal view with ships and a castle on a hill, Peter Van Der Velde (Antwerp 1634 - c.1714)  Translated
Description:
A quality work by the painter Peter Van Der Velde (Antwerp 1634 - c.1714). Coastal view with ships and a castle on a hill. Oil on canvas (70 x 87 cm., framed 76 x 94 cm.) The work is accompanied by a critical study by Prof. Fred G. Meijer (Amsterdam). All details of this painting can be viewed directly at the following - link - The fine coastal view we offer, of excellent quality and rich execution, is a work by the master of Flemish origins, Peter van der Velde (Antwerp 1634-1707), a renowned artist specializing in marine views with port cities, fortresses, and boats, who was already a master of the Guild of St. Luke at the age of twenty. Thanks to his elegant descriptive taste and the scenic sensibility typical of the late 17th-century Flemish landscape tradition, combined with the meticulousness of the smallest details, this composition ranks among the most beautiful and important works by Van der Velde on the market. The author immortalizes a fascinating coastal view, with several boats sailing on the city's shores, which could evoke Antwerp – the painter's birthplace – with sails unfurled, flying the Dutch flag. Some rowboats are heading towards the vessel on the left to supply it with necessary provisions. The depiction of ancient buildings is particularly captivating, such as the large basilica with its bell tower, as well as the religious building with the park surrounded by high walls that we can admire on the right. The work, a typical element of Van de Velde's painting, is characterized by a light, golden glaze, with a distinctly Italianate feel, predominantly featuring blue and ochre tones that envelop the painting in a timeless, fairytale-like atmosphere. Works by Van de Velde are housed in major private collections, including: Amsterdam - Rijksmuseum, Ansbach - Residenz Gemadegalerie, Stockholm - Statens Konstmuseum, Kiev - National Museum, Lille - Fine Arts Museum, London - Greenwich National Maritime Museum, Prague - Nostitz Museum, St. Petersburg - Hermitage Museum. The painting is in good condition and comes with a beautiful gilded frame, with an elegant carved decoration, showing some minor signs of age. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet. We handle and organize the transport of purchased works, both within Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers; it is our duty to warn that, given the delicacy of certain antique frames, there is a possibility of minor gilding damage during transport, despite the utmost care taken in packaging.
