Gaspare Diziani (Belluno 1689 - Venice 1767) - Two Evangelists.  Translated
Description:
Gaspare Diziani (Belluno 1689 - Venice 1767) - Two Evangelists. 33 x 43 cm (unframed) - 43 x 53 cm (framed). Ink and watercolor on paper, in a wooden frame. Publications: E. Martini in "Arte Veneta", XX, 1966, pp. 177-189, fig. 225. Expert appraisals: Prof. Egidio Martini (photographic authentication attached). Gaspare Diziani, a pupil of Gregorio Lazzarini and active in Venice, Dresden, and Munich, is among the protagonists of 18th-century Venetian decorative painting. The sheet depicts two evangelists within oval frames, most likely preparatory studies for an ecclesiastical decorative cycle. The figure on the left, accompanied by an angel, refers to Saint Matthew; the one on the right, with the ox, to Saint Luke. The ink strokes are quick and confident, with watercolor highlights that give volume to the dynamic drapery. The fluid draftsmanship and dynamic rendering of the figures are characteristics that are well-documented in Diziani's oeuvre of drawings.
