The canvas presented, the work of a 17th-century Lombard painter, shows the image of Christ depicted according to the iconography of the Ecce Homo, with a crown of thorns placed over his long hair, stripped of his clothes, awaiting his imminent crucifixion on Golgotha.
… Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns. Pilate said to them: “Behold the man.” When the chief priests and their officers saw him, they cried out: “Crucify him, crucify him!” (Gospel of John 19:5).
This type of representation of Christ, precisely termed Ecce Homo, which, as specified, precedes the moment of his Crucifixion, after having been arrested and scourged, while being subjected to mockery by the Roman soldiers, who crown him with thorns in mockery of the one who had proclaimed himself King of Kings, became widespread in the 16th century, giving rise to particularly intense creations.
The image reconciles the considerable spiritual strength of Christ in his moment of human suffering with refined elegance, supported by the superb descriptive skill of the face that stands out from the dark background.
Although the Ecce Homo is not an 'easy' subject, in our case it is not a work treated with a strong sense of drama, but it is still capable of evoking emotion. Awaiting his martyrdom, what strikes is the face that appears imperturbable and not at all suffering, but rather serene, evoking the forgiveness he granted to his executioners.
The canvas is in good condition, considering its age.
The painting, like all our items, is sold with a photographic certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law.
