This is a "book-top" game table. The structure is designed to be versatile: placed against a wall, it serves as an elegant console or side table; when opened, it doubles its useful surface, transforming into a perfect square surface for games or conversation.
Style and Chronology
The piece fully embodies the dictates of the Louis XVI style, dating from the last quarter of the 18th century (approximately 1775-1790). Its aesthetic definitively abandons the sinuous lines of the "barocchetto"/Rococo in favor of neoclassical geometric rigor, evident in the linearity of the frieze and the characteristic shape of the legs.
Structural Features and Decoration
The Top (Inlay and Cabinetmaking)
The top is the decorative centerpiece of the furniture and displays refined mastery in the art of wood inlay:
* The central rosette: Features a circular inlay shaped like a geometric umbel or parasol (or radiating/pinwheel motif), made of boxwood with outlines darkened using the hot sand technique to create a chiaroscuro and perspective effect of great depth. The rosette is ideally divided into two perfect halves to allow for the book-style opening.
* The grain arrangement: The background veneer (in walnut) is arranged in a "herringbone" pattern, creating a geometric dynamism that converges towards the center.
* The borders: The perimeter of the top and the frieze is defined by geometric herringbone and ribbon inlays, typical of the neoclassical repertoire, which elegantly frame the main fields.
The Support
* The Legs: The table is supported by four slender, inverted pyramid-shaped legs (the classic hairpin legs). They are enhanced by a longitudinal inlay that accentuates their slenderness and verticality.
* The Frieze: Beneath the top, the frieze features a veneered and inlaid band in perfect stylistic continuity with the rest of the piece.
* Dimensions: 75 x 37 cm, height 74 cm.
Production Area
Stylistic analysis of the inlay, the type of pinwheel central rosette, and the choice of woods (particularly the use of walnut combined with light and dark inlays on sober but warm lines) lead to the almost absolute certainty of identifying the production area as Northern Italy.
Condition
The furniture is in good condition. The spirit and shellac polishing enhances the brilliance and grain of the woods.
