Pair of ancient cabinets veneered in sycamore burl, Rome, late 17th/early 18th century  Translated
Description:
Pair of ancient cabinets veneered in sycamore burl, Rome, late 17th/early 18th century. Dimensions: 59x82x46 cm – base: 88x95x60 cm The cabinets have a rectangular structure with two hinged front doors. Inside each cabinet, there are six panels framed to simulate eight drawers arranged in a column in paired rows. The front doors, on the other hand, feature a central carved rectangular motif; one cabinet has a rounded arch, while the other has a square one. The chosen material for their construction, sycamore burl, is highly valuable and makes these two pieces rare collector's items. The technique used is "mirror-image burl arrangement," which involves arranging thin layers of wood so that the grain and characteristic patterns mirror each other, creating very unique and decorative geometric patterns. Furthermore, this technique gives the wood incredible luster. The cabinets rest on gilded and carved wooden pedestals in elaborate curved acanthus leaves, typical of the late Roman Baroque style.  Translated
