Antique Oil Painting on Canvas - Saint Lucy - 17th / 18th Century
Description of the work: Precious antique painting, executed in oil on canvas, depicting Saint Lucy. The Saint is portrayed in a half-length view, with her gaze directed upwards in an expression of devotional ecstasy, illuminated by a divine beam of light coming from the upper left corner.
Iconographic and Stylistic Details:
Subject: The figure holds a cup or tray in her right hand containing her eyes, a symbol of her martyrdom and patronage of sight. In her left hand, she clutches the palm, an emblem of the victory of martyrs.
Clothing and Adornment: She wears a purple garment with ochre/gold sleeves. Her head is adorned with a rich garland of flowers (roses and small white flowers) woven into her dark hair, framing a face with sweet features and fair skin. A golden hoop earring adds a touch of sober elegance.
Style: The work shows an interesting use of chiaroscuro, with a dark background that highlights the luminosity of the figure and the halo surrounding her head. The painting technique and the rendering of the face suggest a chronological placement between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, probably of Italian origin.
State of Conservation: The painting is in general condition consistent with its age.
