Workshop of Jacopo Bassano (Bassano del Grappa c. 1510 - 1592) - The Entombment of Christ.
65.5 x 50.5 cm (unframed) - 83 x 70 cm (framed).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition depicts the transport of Christ's body to the tomb, with figures arranged in a tight group around the lifeless body supported by a shroud. The bearded old man holding the body from behind, the women in the foreground — including one veiled in white who bends down with a sorrowful gesture — and the figure in red on the right precisely recall the iconographic invention of the Bassano altarpiece from 1574. The treatment of light, which emerges from a dark background and models the volumes with strong chiaroscuro, and the popular characterization of the figures are elements of the Bassanesque tradition, widely replicated by the workshop and Jacopo's sons throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
