Pair of antique carved and gilded frames from Central Italy, made from a single pine board, carved in the style of imaginative and dynamic ornamentation typical of the late Baroque. The structure is dominated by interlacing "C" and "S" volutes of extreme fluidity; curled and jagged acanthus leaves add a sense of organic movement. The upper crest of the frame is particularly elaborate, featuring a stylized shell or floral motif that acts as a visual focal point, typical of "cartouche" style parade or mirror frames. The gilding, in fine gold leaf, was applied water gilt over a bole preparation of sienna earth. The frames are from Central Italy and date to the mid-1700s. Despite minor losses and old restorations visible in the joints, as documented in the photographic gallery, the frames are in good condition. Both have undergone repeated woodworm treatments.
