German realist painter (19th century) - Two children play with a trained dog.  Translated
Description:
German realist painter (19th century) - Two children play with a trained dog. 56.5 x 46.5 cm (unframed) - 69 x 59 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Work indistinctly signed in the lower right. The scene depicts two children in a rustic interior: the younger one, wearing a paper cone hat, holds a toy trumpet and interacts with a white dog standing on its hind legs, while the older one encourages him with a hand gesture, as if giving a command to the dog. In the background, a rocking horse on wheels, a ajar door with a lurking cat, and decorative details can be glimpsed, contextualizing the scene in a popular domestic environment. The composition, the painterly rendering of the figures, and the quality of execution are reminiscent of the central European genre painting tradition of the second half of the 19th century, with stylistic affinities to the German and Austro-Hungarian schools.
