"Madonna"
Lacquered wooden sculpture in imitation marble.
Period: 2nd half of the 16th century
Roman Renaissance - School of Michelangelo Buonarroti
Dimensions: height 102 cm, width 64 cm, depth 27 cm
Detailed Description
Extraordinary wooden sculpture depicting the full-length standing Virgin, lacquered to imitate white statuary marble.
It is a work of exceptional beauty, with carving that is as vigorous as it is precise in its details.
The movements of the body and drapery, although extremely rich to showcase the author's abilities, are rendered with incredible lifelike effect.
We are in the finest Italian Renaissance, and the plasticity of the forms has reached the pinnacle of perfection.
The sculpture, already complex in the structure of its drapery, gains further movement from the Virgin's extended arm, which with remarkable skill slightly closes the fingers of her hand.
This is a splendid artwork created in the latter half of the 16th century by a Roman sculptor from the Michelangelesque school.
The strong influence of Buonarroti's works is evident, particularly in the perfect classical features of the face, accentuated by the choice of lacquering to imitate Carrara marble.
The sculpture is in excellent condition, presenting all its beauty without any missing parts or restorations.
