Diana's Rest, Guillaume Courtois known as "il Borgognone" (Saint Hippolyte 1626 - Rome 1679)  Translated
Description:
Guillaume Courtois known as "il Borgognone" (Saint Hippolyte 1626 - Rome 1679) Diana's Rest Oil on canvas (cm. 97 x 70. - framed cm. 121 x 95) The complete details of this work can be consulted directly from the following - LINK - The painting presented, of remarkable qualitative and artistic level, is a work executed in the second half of the 17th century by an artist from the Roman area. The episode illustrates the rest of the goddess of the hunt, Diana, depicted asleep, lying in the shade of a tree, semi-nude with only a veil covering her pubic area and resting on a blue sheet, after a hunt, with her spear still in her hands and her quiver resting in front of her. The goddess, ready to enjoy the pleasures of a relaxing sleep, is surrounded and protected by a host of fluttering putti, some playing with one of her hounds, some having fun riding a branch, while others are busy holding up a red cloth, as if to protect her intimacy from prying eyes. The analysis of the stylistic and figurative characteristics, as anticipated, shows its belonging to the Roman school of the High Baroque, capable of expressing a refined style, and managing to blend the Baroque language, by definition lavish, with elements of classicist descent. It is therefore a painting of immediate beauty, capable of combining remarkable pictorial finesse with a scenic construction that can satisfy even the most demanding gaze. In particular, the work shows clear reminiscences with the Cortona sphere, and precisely with the figures of Guillaume Courtois known as "il Borgognone" (Saint Hippolyte 1626 - Rome 1679). In his painting, and therefore also in the work presented, a classicist figurative culture emerges with influences from typically Baroque heritages, from which his training in Pietro da Cortona's workshop is evident. The painting, in good condition, shows a slight patina of time that we have decided not to clean, as the work remains perfectly legible. It has a professionally executed relining, and is complete with a pleasant antique carved wooden frame.
