Iron Age Painting Follower of Pietro da Cortona  Translated
Description:
Oil on canvas. The work reprises the fresco created by Pietro da Cortona on a wall of the Stufa Room in Palazzo Pitti, part of the cycle of the Four Ages of Man, inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. The scenes of the Bronze and Iron Ages contrast the images of a civilized society with those of violence enacted during wartime. As Ovid states, during the Iron Age, fraud and deceit were born, and men not only demanded that the earth yield its fruits but also dug into its depths. Thus, iron and gold came to light, and war began, with it acts of pillage and violent plunder, harming even the defenseless, such as the elderly, women, and children. In this scene, also known as "Group of soldiers massacring civilians," dramatic scenes of violence and oppression are thus depicted, such as the soldier in the foreground about to kill the defenseless old man on the ground or, on the right, the man cutting off a young mother's hair to take her ornaments, despite her pleas. The painting shows traces of previous minor restorations from antiquity. Strip frame. Product condition: Product in good condition, shows minor signs of wear. We strive to present the actual state as completely as possible with photos. If any details are unclear from the photos, what is stated in the description is authoritative.
