The pleasant painting, depicting a sumptuous composition of flowers scenographically arranged in an outdoor garden, is the work of a painter from the circle of Francesco Lavagna (Naples, 1684 - 1724), one of the most well-known protagonists of Neapolitan still life painting in the early 18th century, along with Gaspare Lopez, both of whom trained in the atelier of Andrea Belvedere.
This is an excellent example of the aesthetic level and expressive qualities achieved by the painter, who was capable of creating lively compositions with great aesthetic effect and a characteristic rocaille taste, also showing a beautiful chromatic sensibility, enhanced by skillful plays of glazes and thicknesses of material.
A distinctive and recurring element in his artistic compositions is the white majolica plate with blue decorations. Lavagna often included ceramic vases, jugs, and plates with delicate bluish coloring to create luminous contrasts with the vibrant colors of flowers and fruits. The presence of these objects reflected the taste of the time for fine craftsmanship that circulated in the port of Naples, including pieces inspired by Oriental porcelain.
Neapolitan still life painting, once sought after by great collectors and destined to enrich the finest palaces of Naples, finds in Francesco Lavagna a significant exponent, much loved by such a clientele, with his canvases that were never banal and possessed a descriptive capacity of remarkable visual impact.
The compositional choices are typical of the painter's repertoire, who liked to create his floral compositions, with diverse varieties of species, set en plein air within gardens, with plants placed in pots and arranged on the ground with apparent randomness and disorder.
