A Flemish painter active in the second half of the 17th century, Pauwels Casteels trained in the Antwerp tradition, characterized by a solid mastery of drawing and a vibrant yet controlled palette. His work includes historical and biblical subjects treated with a narrative language of Rubensian origin, attentive to the rendering of expressions and the dynamism of the figures.
The painting depicts the biblical episode of David presented before King Saul, as told in the First Book of Samuel. The scene unfolds in a scenographically arranged architectural interior, with columns and vaults in the background lending depth and solemnity to the setting. Saul, seated on his throne and draped in a red mantle, is captured in a gesture of disdain or agitation, while David, young and in light attire at the center of the composition, is surrounded by a crowd of armored warriors and court figures. The gestures of the figures are lively and varied, revealing a good skill in rendering the dramatic tension of the scene. The technique on copper, typical of Flemish painting of the period, allows for a particularly sharp rendering of details, from metallic armor to fabrics. It is worth noting the size of the copper plate, unusually large for this medium, which makes the work a rare example in the panorama of 17th-century copper painting.
Condition report: Good condition of the painted surface. A slight deformation of the copper plate is noted, common in metal supports of similar age.
