A Flemish painter active in the second half of the 17th century, Pauwels Casteels trained in the Antwerp tradition, characterized by a solid command of drawing and a vibrant, controlled palette. His work includes historical and biblical subjects treated with a narrative style of Rubensian origin, attentive to the rendering of expressions and the dynamism of figures.
The painting depicts the triumph of David after his victory over Goliath, an episode narrated in the First Book of Samuel. The scene unfolds outdoors, with architectural ruins on the left and a vast landscape in the background, animated by trees and a cloudy sky. At the center of the composition, David advances, playing the harp, surrounded by a jubilant crowd of women, musicians, and common people celebrating the victory. In the foreground, a figure carries Goliath's head, while to the right, the military procession, with soldiers in armor and King Saul's chariot, concludes the triumphant procession. The vibrant palette, dominated by harmonies of yellow, blue, and red, and the multiplicity of human types depicted reveal the same hand as the pendant. The technique on copper, of unusually large format for this support, allows for a sharp rendering of details and excellent preservation of the original coloring.
Condition report: Good condition of the painted surface. Slight deformation of the copper plate is noted, common in metal supports of similar age.
