Ceres, terracotta sculpture
Early 20th century
Dimensions: Height 142 x 27 x 27 cm (with base)
Terracotta sculpture, modeled in the round, depicting a standing female deity, iconographically identifiable as Ceres, goddess of the harvest, abundance, and an allegory of Summer.
This attribution is confirmed by the finely detailed sheaf of wheat ears that the figure naturally holds under her left arm.
The composition is distinguished by a refined formal balance: the naked torso, with canonical and harmonious proportions, delicately emerges from masterfully sculpted drapery that encircles the hips, creating a play of deep folds and chiaroscuro with a strong naturalistic feel.
The artist's technical expertise is also evident in the sculptural rendering of the complexion and the complex updo, where the defined curls recall the models of Greco-Roman statuary so celebrated during the Grand Tour and in the years that followed.
The sculpture is mounted on a modern metal stand, enhancing its verticality and stability.
