The painting by Giovanni Grifo, linked to the late achievements of the historical school, both for the mastery of compositions and the elegance of forms, takes on a character all its own when he superimposes lively movement and intense color onto the pictorial problem. He treated all painting techniques with equal ease: fresco, tempera, watercolor, and oil painting. His most important works of easel painting were largely created in his studio in one of the domes of the Genoa Stock Exchange building. His fresco decorations on vaults and facades deserve special mention. He won the competition for the decoration of the facade of Palazzo S. Giorgio.
For his original artistic whim, he always refrained from participating in art exhibitions but made his love for Genoa and his faith in tradition public, restoring, at his own expense and with considerable risk to his health, the ancient coat of arms of Genoa on the facade of the Lanterna.
