Pair of Candle-bearing Angels
gilded and polychrome wood sculptures
Northern Italy, late 17th–early 18th century
Dimensions: height 116 x 30 x 27 cm
Pair of sculptures depicting candle-bearing angels, created between the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The angels are depicted standing, wrapped in classical-style tunics characterized by deeply carved drapery and jutting folds, typical of the aesthetic sensibility of the High Baroque period.
The surface is embellished with sumptuous gilding leaf that covers the robes and majestic outstretched wings, creating extraordinary plays of light and shade.
The delicately crafted faces convey a sense of hieratic serenity.
The heads are adorned with leafy garlands and surmounted by small friezes, while the arms elegantly support cornucopias with candle-bearing plates.
Of notable architectural interest are the plinth bases, decorated on the front with winged cherub heads and finished with green backgrounds that enhance the gilded moldings.
The work rests on elegant curled feet, maintaining impeccable stylistic coherence.
Excellent state of preservation.
The work, like all our other objects, will be sold with a certificate of authenticity.
