Late 19th century

Original gilded frame 85 x 70

This evocative Venetian canvas depicts the Rio dei Mendicanti, with its namesake bridge and the church of San Lazzaro directly overlooking the canal waters.
It is a view made famous by the masterpieces of Canaletto, who painted it in several of his works now in the Cà Rezzonico museum, and by Francesco Guardi. This artwork is inspired by a famous painting by Guardi, now exhibited at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. (See last photo)
The author reinterprets it in a very fine manner towards the end of the 19th century, creating the same atmosphere as Guardi's late 18th-century works, thanks to a very particular chromatic range, very similar to the original one. The coloration is indeed typical of the mature period of the Venetian Master and is permeated by a twilight light of great charm.
The canvas can certainly be attributed to one of the particularly gifted artists working in Venice at the end of the 19th century, and it stands out from many similar reproductions due to its notable pictorial quality, which makes it very fascinating and of excellent decorative effect.
A beautiful antique gilded frame completes the work excellently.
