Circle of Jacques Courtois, called Borgognone (Saint-Hyppolite 1621 - Rome 1676) - Knightly Battle.  Translated
Description:
Circle of Jacques Courtois, called Borgognone (Saint-Hyppolite 1621 - Rome 1676) - Knightly Battle. 53 x 80 cm (unframed) - 73.5 x 97.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a 19th-century carved and gilded wood display frame. The composition fits within the tradition of 17th-century battle painting, of which Jacques Courtois, known as Borgognone, was one of the most recognizable interpreters in Italy in the second half of the 17th century. The scene depicts a group of knights in full combat, rendered with rapid brushstrokes and a color palette reduced to tones of brown, grey, and white, animated by touches of light emerging from the dark background. A second group of combatants can be glimpsed in the background, immersed in a dusty light that suggests the depth of the battlefield. The compositional structure and the handling of tonal contrasts are reminiscent of Borgognone's circle, although a more specific attribution cannot be made at present.
