E. Scattolini (active in Venice in the early 20th century) - Fishing boats in the lagoon with a view of Burano.  Translated
Description:
E. Scattolini (active in Venice in the early 20th century) - Fishing boats in the lagoon with a view of Burano. 112 x 68 cm (unframed) - 126 x 81 cm (framed). Oil on panel, in a wooden frame. Artwork signed lower left: "E. Scattolini / 1914 Venice". The painting depicts two bragozzi moored in the Venetian lagoon, seen bow-on, with the dark silhouettes of the hulls and well-defined rigging occupying the foreground. In the background, the silent lagoon opens up, animated by gentle reflections, with the island recognizable as Burano in the distance, identifiable by its leaning bell tower and low buildings. The palette, tinted with turquoise and blue-greens with warm touches on the background architecture, reveals an en plein air sensibility updated to the experiences of early 20th-century Venetian painting. The brushwork is loose and modulated, effective in rendering the aquatic surfaces and the moving sky. The surname Scattolini is very close to that of the Venetian painter Ferruccio Scattola (Venice 1873 - Rome 1950), active in the same years and with a similar predilection for lagoon subjects; it is not to be excluded that it is a relative or that the name constitutes a pseudonym. This matter would deserve further archival research.
