The painting depicts a Venetian canal with, in the foreground on the left, the side of a Gothic palace with an ochre facade, a staircase leading down to the water, and a low arched bridge in the center, under which a gondola is moored. In the background, buildings open up towards a silent lagoon, rendered in cool shades of grey-green under a cloudy sky. The palette, dominated by ochre, green, and grey with orange accents in the reflections on the water, and the rapid, textured brushstrokes refer to Venetian en plein air painting of the early 20th century.
