Venetian painter (19th century) - View of Padua from Porta Liviana with the Basilica of Sant'Antonio in the background.  Translated
Description:
Venetian painter (19th century) - View of Padua from Porta Liviana with the Basilica of Sant'Antonio in the background. 37.5 x 48.5 cm (unframed) - 50.5 x 60 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved wooden frame. The painting depicts a view of Padua dominated by the profile of the Basilica of Sant'Antonio, the large Franciscan complex built from the 13th century onwards in honor of the Portuguese saint, one of the most revered in Christendom. The unmistakable Byzantine domes and bell towers of the Basilica clearly emerge in the background, framed within a landscape composition that alternates between masses of trees and urban architecture. To the right of the scene stands Porta Liviana, a defensive tower of medieval origin that was once part of the city's wall system. The foreground is enlivened by figures of peasants engaged in agricultural work, a cart pulled by donkeys, and a group of children with a dog, vignettes that recall the 18th-century Venetian veduta repertoire. The execution reveals an expert hand in the atmospheric rendering of the landscape, with luminous brushwork and a mastery of deep perspective effects.
