The Adoration of the Magi, Giovanni Stradano (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605) workshop  Translated
Description:
Jan Van der Straet, known as Giovanni Stradano (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), Workshop of The Adoration of the Magi late 16th century - early 17th century oil on canvas (Dimensions: 72 x 60 cm. - with frame 86 x 74 cm.) Full details directly via the following - link - The painting presented depicts the scene of the Adoration of the Magi, a theme favored in ancient painting. It unfolds according to traditional iconography, where in front of the figures of the Holy Family, placed on the left of the composition, the three Kings are depicted sumptuously dressed. The eldest, kneeling in adoration of the Child and kissing His hand, has already laid down his crown and sword at the Virgin's feet, while the second and third await their turn to honor the sacred event, with their precious gifts still in their hands. The work, of excellent quality and mature pictorial execution, is perfectly placed within the Tuscan Mannerism period, between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Direct evidence allows it to be associated with the modus pingendi of the Flemish artist Jan Van der Straet (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), Italianized as Giovanni Stradano, who was particularly active in Florence. Originally Flemish, his artistic training took place in Antwerp, before moving to Italy around 1550. He first went to Venice and then to Florence, where he found employment with Grand Duke Cosimo I within the circle of Giorgio Vasari. Some of his altarpieces for Florentine churches and his numerous drawings, which were used to create widely disseminated engravings, are highly valued. However, it is difficult to attribute the production of our canvas to a specific hand, as there are evident interminglings between the Flemish art imported by the painter and Italian art. The painting is superbly decorative, of good executive quality, and characterized by vigorous lines and a marked play of light and shadow. The work is in a good state of conservation; the canvas is sound and presents scattered retouches on the surface. As with all our items, the work is sold with a photographic certificate of authenticity in compliance with the law. We handle and organize the transport of purchased works, both within Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers.
