Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Cesare Laurenti was a multifaceted artist, very important in the history of applied arts in Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries, oscillating between easel painting, wall decoration, sculpture, illustration, architecture, engraving, monumental ceramics, restoration, technical experimentation, and antique dealing. His early work shows the influence of Domenico Morelli, of whom he was a student in Naples, and some of his realism is inspired by rural scenes, with shepherdesses and flocks, like the one presented here. His artistic activity subsequently shifted towards more Symbolist production, with experiments in different artistic techniques. The artwork is presented in a styled frame.
