Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with shepherds and a spinner.  Translated
Description:
Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with shepherds and a spinner. 48 x 63.5 cm (unframed) - 59 x 74.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Appraisals: Prof. Ugo Ruggeri, Venice (critical sheet attached). Giuseppe Zais is among the most celebrated landscape painters of the Venetian school of the 18th century, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes with stylized figures of shepherds, flocks, and washerwomen, set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Venetian countryside. He trained in Venice, where he was able to observe the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew clear inspiration, and was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli, from whom he derived the grace that characterizes his most refined works. Zais's style was distinguished by a more authentically rural depiction of the Arcadian landscape compared to that of his contemporaries: the compositions, although Rococo-inspired, are imbued with a different sense of realism, given by the use of more marked and brown tones and by a material and pasty application of color. The painting is a high-quality work, executed by the Belluno master in the prime of his maturity. The protagonists of the scene are the small figures in the center, finely depicted in a moment of peace and serenity by the stream: a mother with her child, who have come to get water from the river, while behind them a spinner is approached by a young man lying on the grass. The entire scene is immersed in a landscape rendered by vibrant brushstrokes, not rigidly delineated, which gives the ensemble an intimate and idealized sense. Condition report: Lined canvas.
