Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with resting knights.
55.5 x 85.5 cm (unframed) - 78 x 98.5 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wood frame.
Giuseppe Zais is among the most celebrated landscape painters of the Venetian school of the eighteenth century, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes with stylized figures of shepherds, flocks, and washerwomen, set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Venetian countryside. He trained in Venice, where he was able to observe the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew evident inspiration, and he was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli, from whom he derived the grace that characterizes his more refined works.
Zais's style was distinguished by a more authentically rural depiction of the Arcadian landscape compared to that of his contemporaries: the compositions, although Rococo-inspired, are pervaded by a different sense of realism, due to the use of more pronounced, earthy tones and a material, pasty application of color.
The painting, confidently attributed to Giuseppe Zais, depicts a group of travelers resting: in the center, a man on horseback indicates the direction to a companion, while on the left a groom holds a packhorse and on the right a woman on foot observes the scene. In the background, architectural ruins open up on the left and a hilly landscape animated by other wayfarers on the right, all rendered with the loose brushwork and the brown and earthy palette typical of the Belluno artist's maturity.
