This magnificent Emilian canvas from the late 16th century depicts the Virgin with the Child embraced by Saint John the Baptist, while at the sides of the scene, in profile portraits, Saint Catherine of Alexandria turns towards the Madonna, and Saint Zachary, father of the young John the Baptist, observes the two children with a stern gaze.
The work, albeit with notable compositional and chromatic variations, reprises Parmigianino's famous painting "Madonna of Saint Zachary" (dimensions 75.5 x 60 cm), dated between 1530 and 1533 and housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The extraordinary success of this masterpiece, attributed not only to its beauty but also to the surreal atmosphere of the landscape and the highly esoteric features of the characters, prompted the best Emilian masters to reproduce it, each with their own pictorial characteristics.
In this exciting and very particular canvas, the Author maintains the unmistakable style of the great Master of Parma, but distinguishes himself with an extremely vibrant palette, combined with an exceptional knowledge of color usage.
Also very interesting is the inclusion in the composition of Saint Catherine of Alexandria with her iconographic attribute, who takes the place of Mary Magdalene, the protagonist of Parmigianino's original painting displayed at the Uffizi.
The canvas is in excellent condition, complete with an important gilded frame.
