Oil on canvas. This is a beautiful copy of the famous painting created by Simon Vouet (1590 -1649) between 1618 and 1620, and located in a chapel of the church of San Francesco a Ripa in Rome. Created by Vouet during his Roman stay, the work shows a significant Caravaggesque influence in its chromatic and lighting choices, as well as in the poses of the figures. These characteristics are faithfully found in this copy. The palette is rich in colors (blues, oranges, obviously reds) that materialize in grand brushwork drapery, but white cloths also abound everywhere to provide light and create visual impact. Rich details: the elaborate hairstyle of the figure with their back to us and their bare foot in the foreground (but not dirty, unlike those of Merisi); the white vase on the ground contrasting with the large copper basin; the lace of the shirt and the turban of the woman on the right, as well as the latter's left hand (a typical Caravaggesque pose) extended open towards the viewer, which adds a touch of depth to the scene. The painting was restored and relined at the end of the 19th century, and mounted on a frame from the same period. It is presented in a late 19th-century frame.
