Description
Bible based on the oldest exemplars, now newly corrected. In this edition, besides what the following preface indicates, each chapter is divided into verses, so that the preceding numbers do not delay the reader, and the sought-after locations are pointed out as if by a finger. Venice, printed by the Heirs of Nicolaus Bevilaqua and associates. 1574.
Title page with a rich architectural frieze in woodcut, featuring God the Father blessing in the center, Aaron and Moses at the bottom. Within cartouches in medallions are depicted biblical episodes: the sacrifice of Isaac and Saint Jerome composing the Vulgate; hundreds of woodcut illustrations within vignettes with Renaissance frames decorated with grotesques; excellent quality initials. Text in two columns within a typographical frame with marginal references. Edges sprinkled with red. Full contemporary vellum binding with clasps and 19th-century reinforcements to the spine, title on a gold label. An excellent example of the Vulgate with Latin text. Only a very slight discoloration at the end of the volume in the upper margin.
